A couple years ago I remember always saying, “I’m just not a morning person.” I would hit the snooze button on my alarm several times and when I finally woke up I was rushing through all those morning tasks to get to work on time! My mornings were a mess. Can you relate?
I knew I needed to make some changes so I began with changing my mindset. I told myself I am a morning person and I implemented 10 effective habits into my morning routine. These 10 morning routine habits helped increase my productivity, improved my wellness, and ultimately was one of the reasons why I was able to leave my full time job as a teacher and start working from home as a content creator and blogger. So here are my top 10 morning routine habits:
1). The 5 Second Rule:
A couple years ago I read a book called The 5 Second Rule and it changed my life. The 5 Second Rule suggests that when you hear your alarm go off you should count down 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 and get up. This is from a self-development book by Mel Robbins called The 5 Second Rule. That means no more hitting the snooze button on your alarm 3-4 times before actually getting up. It’s important that you don’t start your day with procrastination.
2). Hydrate Your Body:
I have a bottle of water right beside my bed so as soon as I wake up after my 5 second rule, I immediately drink my water. It’s suggested that drinking water the first thing in the morning helps improve mental performance.
3). Make Your Bed:
Making your bed every morning will help you feel more organized and accomplished! It’s a small task that makes a big difference in your morning. I also take about 5 minutes to tidy up my bedroom and put things where they need to go so I have a clean bedroom.
4). Journal about Gratitude:
Sometimes we wake up and our mind is immediately shifted to all things that are negative or we’re dreading all the tasks we have to do for the day. Shifting your mind and beginning your morning with journaling about 5 things you’re grateful for will help shift your mindset to being more positive.
5). Prayer:
Take time to intentionally connect with God every morning. Connecting with God in the morning will look different for everyone. It could mean listening to spiritual music, praying in a quiet room, reading your Bible, journaling your prayers, meditating, etc. Filling your soul with the Word of God first thing in the morning, will help set you off to a great day and it will also help you get through some of the difficult parts of your day because you know God is guiding you.
6). Dedicate Time to Your Business:
One of the main reasons why I started waking up early and changing my morning routine was because I wanted to dedicate time to my business. I do a “power hour” every morning where I dedicate increments of 15 minutes to various tasks related to my business. For example, you can set your alarm in increments of 15 minutes. When the alarm goes off every 15 minutes you have to move on to the next task related to your business. This has been a game changer for my business. I’ve been able to accomplish so much by simply doing a power hour every morning. 7). Fresh Air:
Getting some fresh air in the morning always helps my mood. All you need is a couple minutes of fresh air and it can instantly put you in a better mood. During the warming months, I enjoy making myself some coffee or tea and going outside in my backyard. It’s always so refreshing.
8). Tea or Coffee:
There are so many health benefits to drinking tea and coffee. One of my favorite benefits is the energy and mental focus that it gives me. I work from home and I also homeschool my kids so I need all the energy to get through my mornings. Also, drinking my tea or coffee gives me more motivation to get those morning tasks done!
9). What’s for Breakfast:
We all know the saying “breakfast is the most important meal of the day!” This is very true! You’ve just slept for several hours overnight and now your body needs some nutrients. If you’re like me, I don’t like cooking a big breakfast in the morning. Typically, I create a list of quick and easy go-to breakfast meals for myself. Creating a breakfast list helps me so I’m not trying to figure out what to eat every morning.
10). Plan and Prep Time:
Make a to-do list and a list of the most important goals you want to accomplish for the day. Planning and prepping for your day will help you be more productive. For example, write out your to-do list and your goals somewhere that you’ll be able to see throughout the day. Put your to-do list and goals on your refrigerator. If you’re in an office, make sure it’s on your desk somewhere. Most importantly, having a planner is so helpful to staying organized. I’ve been using The Harps & Soul Daily Journals!
In conclusion, having morning routine habits is essential to having productive days. So what habits do you plan on incorporating into your morning routine? Remember to start by simply changing your mindset. Say it with me, “I am a morning person! I am creating morning routine habits that will improve my wellness and my productivity!”
